There’s plenty of fantastic group sets that Shimano has made over the years. The 25th anniversary Dura Ace was fantastic as was the Dura Ace AX of many years before. In between there was a very nice 600 EX triple set and XT Deerhead. The 6400 group was one of the most well balanced performers and the Sante group set was like Dura Ace, but traded the champagne finish for complementing mattes and chromes, with some white inbetween.
There was one group set that played the heaviest on how cool white colored bicycle components looked. The 1989 Sport LX in both double and triple was much like the Deore of the day, but was technically at the Exage level. The neat thing is that the black finish of Deore was done in white instead for this group set.
These parts are near impossible to find “New Old Stock” these days. If you have any that are NOS, send us an email, we’ll want to buy them if possible.
The crank arms on the above Trek 420 are also white and Exage, but are not in the Sport LX group like the rear derailleur. That crank, which is a 44T single Biopace chainring replaced the factory triple which seized onto the bottom bracket spindle. If you’re interested if fitting a crank like this, this bottom bracket spindle is what we used.
